Artist Laura Marshall is the kind of artist that you want to spend time with.

When you first meet Laura you are struck by her kindness and generosity of spirit. She is always smiling and brings warmth to everything she does. She makes you want to settle down with a cup of tea and chat about art, life, travel, dogs and the beauty of the world around us.

Originally from rural Michigan, Laura’s childhood was filled with cross-country camping trips and time spent outdoors. Today, she is a Vermonter and still finds herself at home outside, observing the best nature has to offer and often bringing those observations into her artwork.

As a young artist, her talent was immediately recognizable as being something special. A brilliant photographer, Laura is also an accomplished painter and digital artist who can create a variety of looks for publishing and licensing. For the past 8 years, she has worked with us as a designer and artist and we are grateful that she shares her talent with us each and every day.

In our world of creating art for the home, being able to develop looks for trending styles is key, and Laura can do that all day long. Her brilliantly creative mind is always thinking of new ideas, looks, designs and patterns that our customers will love. Her collections are seen on the wall and on products for the home from stationery to dinnerware and more. Our customers love working with her as much as we do.

3 Questions with artist Laura Marshall

1. What was the best thing to come out of the pandemic for you?

Before the pandemic, gouache was something I had just tried one day and ended up loving. So during the pandemic, I took the opportunity to really dig into the medium on a more technical level. I ordered a bunch of books from my favorite illustrators and spent a lot of time reading about and trying new gouache techniques and styles.

2. What do you love creating the most?

Gouache is hands down my favorite painting medium, especially doing anything floral or nature-related, but my first love will always be photography. I have about 7 analog cameras and still develop my own black and white film.

3. What does it feel like to see your art at retail?

No matter how many times I see it, it’s still a bit surreal but always exciting. A few years ago I was on my honeymoon in the Lake District in England, and as we walked through this small town we passed a gallery that had one of my photographs in the window and I did a cartoon double-take. It’s such a thrill to know that my art connects with people.
