We’re excited to introduce Jan Griggs
Originally from Washington State, artist Jan Griggs now calls Arizona home. An artist all her life, Jan’s path to becoming an abstract painter started in 2010 after moving to Scottsdale and taking a workshop in New Mexico. “I love abstract painting. Colors, shapes, lights and darks can be arranged and re-arranged to create the feeling and emotion coming from within the artist.”
“My work is a collection of places, feelings of color, light and dark, movement and stillness that I translate into non-representational abstracts.”
Jan paints with acrylics, usually on canvas or heavy watercolor paper using a variety of tools to move and manipulate the paint. When she is not painting, you can find Jan travelling with her husband, golfing and spending time with friends and family.
Q&A with Jan Griggs
Q: How would you describe your artistic process?
My artistic process is intuitive and spontaneous. My parameters are the color pallet I choose and the shape and size of the surface I am painting on. I have a very loose idea of what I want to create and let the flow of color and paint guide me.
Q: What three words best describe your work?
Happy, colorful, free-spirited.
Q: What kind of art do you hang in your home?
Abstracts, photography, pieces collected while traveling, work of artist friends, an eclectic mix of pieces I feel a connection with.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring artists?
It’s never too late to begin the journey. Creativity comes with a lot of trial and error and mistakes can open the door to your imagination.
Q: What art material could you never give up?
White paint. I use it to paint back into edges to create a feathery, airy look. I also use it to mix color directly on the canvas to get a seamless gradient of color and I coat thread in white paint and drag it over the canvass to get fine lines.
