Michael Clark left a small Scottish town in 1979 to study at the Edinburgh College of Art. But for him, life didn’t really start until he visited Paris in 1980.
After graduating, he spent five years working as a graphic designer with the BBC in Glasgow. In 1989 he moved to London and began easel painting again.
To accommodate a growing studio and family, he returned to Scotland in 1999 where he has been painting full time ever since.
Sketchbooks are always close by, filled with scribbles made in the moment that add to memory. Drawing is a pleasure for him, without the fretting that can sometimes come with easel painting. These pages become visual diaries and a treat to look back on: places seen, wines and food tasted, and the people, places, and postures that can inspire a painting.
